Spurred by Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs many psychologists have pinpointed a handful of key ingredients to a healthy mind.  These essential needs are the steppingstones to living a happy and fulfilled life.  If cultivated correctly these elements lead to self-actualization and the ability to reach a higher consciousness.   Living in a state of higher consciousness  allows us to feel as though we have reached our full potential and found meaning and purpose in our lives.

The essential needs are intricately related to the inner workings of our brain.

The brain has 3 layers:
  1. Brain stem
  2. Limbic system
  3. Neocortex.
Each layer corresponds directly with the 3 essential needs to live a happy life:
  1. Safety
  2. Love and belonging
  3. Significance

Safety is the first and most essential human need that must be met in order to live a happy and fulfilled life.  Our reptilian brain is pre-programmed for survival.   Fight or flight is our automatic mental alarm system that triggers our bodies to react to the world around us.   If you are not in a safe environment your entire body is triggered to be reactionary.   Our survival instincts kick in.

On the other hand, when we are surrounded by people who make us feel safe or spend time in an environment that provides comfort our brains are able to let go of the fight or flight mentality and relax.  Safety thus allows our brains to move to the next stages in the hierarchy of needs: Love and Belonging… and Significance

Being surrounded by the people we love helps us feel important and provides a sense of vitality.  This is a key factor in creating a MetaBusiness as well.   A sense of love and belonging encourages creativity.  Research shows that people excel in group activities when they are in a safe environment surrounded by people they trust.   Some of our best work in the office and at home happens in this state.

The final essential need is the ultimate key to success at home and in business.  A feeling of significance links to our neocortex and allows us to reach a higher consciousness. The neocortex is the most “human” part of our brains.  It is responsible for sensory perception, spatial reasoning, communication, and philosophical thoughts. Reaching a feeling of significance allows you to unlock the true power of your brain.  In this state you are able to think outside the box, come up with new and unique ways to handle situations, and become a more impactful person at work and at home.

Evaluate where you find yourself on the hierarchy of needs at home and in the office.  If you’re not fulfilling the essential needs consider making adjustments in your life.
